Creative Assembly, the multi-award-winning BAFTA UK games studio, is a longstanding client of ours. They rely on us to make every annual Christmas party even better than the last and, with a pandemic in the mix, this was our biggest challenge yet!

Since setting up in 1987, the company has enjoyed great success and has grown rapidly and now operates from several different studios in several different countries. The company places great value in their people, something that has been recognised within the games industry – Creative Assembly has won a Best Place to Work Award for four consecutive years. But speed of growth and geography has meant that there has never been an opportunity to hold a company-wide event where everyone could be in the same place at the same time. This year, the need to run events virtually because of Covid-19 meant the opportunity was there and we were well placed to help our client grasp it with both hands!

Following a very demanding year, we were asked to plan, organise and deliver an event that would engage and wow all of the teams. We pushed the boat out and secured a variety of headline talent that were beyond expectation – comedian Milton Jones, who regularly appears on the BBC’s Mock the Week panel show, amazing magician Troy, interactive gaming from WiFi Wars and an after-party virtual video DJ set from top hip-hop turntablist DJ Yoda.

Starting at 3pm and running for 4.5 hours, we ran the event from our virtual studio and hosted the event on Zoom. Our tech team managed the production of the event to ensure TV quality output and seamless transitions between content. Our event compere linked and introduced every act, while our team behind the scenes made sure everyone was on cue. In between acts, we ran pre-recorded ‘happy holidays’ messages from the studio heads, a nice touch that helped create a great sense of community.

The entertainment was undoubtedly impressive, but guests were surprised by a further highlight – a personalised video message from eleven celebrities. In advance of the event, our video production team edited all the messages into one showstopping feature and guests enjoyed spotting their favourite celebs, including Carol Baskin of Tiger King fame, actors Ricki Lake, Melissa Joan Hart and Steve Guttenberg, and drag queen Chad Michaels. The chat on the Zoom session went ballistic, with thousands of instant messages posted!

Who says a virtual event can’t be a really cool and memorable experience!
